A Blast from the past
We recently found an article published in the Edinburgh Leisure News from July 2002 which we had forgotten about. It reads:
"As a result of a very long wet autumn and spring Silverknowes Golf Course has been closed for weeks at a time leaving a big dent in the income generated at the course.
In terms of customer satisfaction this was a disaster and in financial terms a major loss to Edinburgh Leisure of upwards of £2,500 per weekly closure.
Eddie Hanratty, Grounds Maintenance Manager, said "This had long been recognised as a problem that had to be addressed. We commissioned a drainage consultant to carry out a survey and produce a drainage plan for the course."
Thereafter a job specification was drawn up and Leslie Dick and Sons have been appointed to carry out the work at a cost of £60,000. This involves excavating trenches and installing wavincoil drainage pipes.
All finishing works to restore the golf course to its excellent playing conditions will be carried out by Edinburgh Leisure's greenkeeping staff.
Eddie contined: "Members of the public who regulary use the course have shown their appreciation through comments to greenkeeping staff as well as to the golf starters. The work is being carried out in four sections to cause minimum disruption to our customers and should take about five weeks to complete. All going well there should be a lot of satisfied customers."
Eddie Wood, former club captain of Silverknowes Golf Club, and one of our regular users commented "the course is in great playing condition at the moment, but this drainage work was desperately needed as we were losing more days every year, due to flooding. Our members are delighted at the commitment shown by Edinburgh Leisure to Silverknowes Golf Course."
